⦿ ROBERT HENKE [DE] /// DUST
live performance
/// DUST [live performance] Dust is a slow and intense exploration of textural sounds, pulsating polyrhythmic loops, and rich harmonic drones. They are shredded into microscopic particles, filtered, transformed and recomposed in an improvised performance. Dust is a complex living beast, developing further each concert, with old parts being removed, and new elements added.
ROBERT HENKE 's works cover a wide spectrum, from musical compositions and concerts to large-scale audiovisual installations. They often require inventing and constructing algorithms and machines. His music is inspired by the raw repetitive power of techno and the complex, refined structures of more abstract contemporary works. He also records and performs music as 'Monolake', which started as a duo in 1995 together with Gerhard Behles, and has been a solo project since 1999. He is one of the main creators of Ableton Live, a software which became a standard for music production and redefined the performance practice of electronic music. He held teaching positions at the Berlin University of the Arts, the Center for Computer Research in Music and Acoustics (CCRMA) at Stanford University, the Institut de Recherche et Coordination Acoustique/Musique (IRCAM) in Paris, and the Studio National des Arts Contemporains - Le Fresnoy, in Lille, France.
/// MACHINES INSIDE ME [mixed media performance] The electromechanical instruments of Machines Inside Me are means endowed with a further degree of autonomy in terms of performative capacity, they are capable of producing and controlling sound autonomously. This capacity works synergistically with two human performers who interact with their robotic counterparts to bring the performance to life. The interaction between the performers and the machines allows the creation of complex sounds, the production and subsequent evolution of which is the basis for the development of the piece. Automated instruments and human performers orchestrate each other, intervening equally in the overall sound production process, using the specific mechanical sounds of the machines involved as a starting point for realising ever-changing and different sonic solutions. The performance places man and machine on an equal footing, entrusting them with the same roles and functions, and placing the specific and peculiar qualities of the instruments used, specially made for the performance, at the centre of the musical discourse.
Fabio Machiavelli studied Percussion Instruments with Jonathan Faralli (MA, 2018), and Composition with Giovanni Verrando, Daniele Ghisi, Andrea Agostini (MA in Composition, 2022), Claudio Vaira, Fabio De Sanctis De Benedictis (BA in Composition, 2020). He studied at the Accademia Chigiana with Salvatore Sciarrino, receiving the Diploma di Merito in 2024. His music has been performed by Input Duo, Neko3, Mdi Ensemble, Divertimento Ensemble, Spòldzielnia Muzyczna, Quartetto Prometeo, Endkadenz, Livorno Music Festival Ensemble and others, and presented in festivals as: La Biennale di Venezia, Warsaw Autumn, Sacroprofanum Festival, Darmstadt, Suoni Inauditi, Tempo Reale, others.
He attended masterclasses with Salvatore Sciarrino, Francesco Filidei, Stefano Gervasoni, Fabien Lèvy, Alessandro Perini, Jaime Reis, Thierry Coduys, Marco Stroppa, Miller Puckette, Brigitta Muntendorf, Alberto Carretero, Alessandro Solbiati, Ivan Fedele, others. His music is published by SZ Sugar.
